The level of the river Shannon will reach its peak and may begin to recede by this weekend. That was the message delivered by Westmeath County Council on Monday afternoon, December 14.

A proposal by Fine Gael councillor Pearce Flannery to try to allievate traffic congestion on the Seamus Quirke Road has failed to get the backing of Galway City Council, despite impassioned pleas from a number of local representatives. Cllr Flannery wanted the National Transport Authority to consider piloting a scheme whereby cars with three or more people could travel on the bus lane on Seamus Quirke Road. He believes this would encourage commuters travelling from the west side of the city to work on the east side to car pool. He has spoken before about the length of time it takes to cross the city at rush hour.

Councillors at Monday's Municipal District Meeting welcomed a new design for the proposed cycleway and pedestrian bridge across the Shannon in Athlone town.

Members of the West Mayo Municipal District this morning (Monday, November 9) rejected the proposed discretionary part of the districts General Municipal Allocation. It had been proposed that the elected members would have a discretionary allocation of €390,000 to spend in the area over the coming 12 months.

The elected memebrs of the West Mayo Municipal District this week once again insisted that there would be no introduction of on street parking charges in the district and added that the district should not see its budget affected because of their decision not to introduce the charges to the town in the area.
